Prior to shipping hazardous materials, the originating department must fax a Hazardous Material Information Sheet to Mail Services (530) 752-8223. A Material Safety Data Sheet, MSDS, can help you complete the information sheet. Most MSDSs can be obtained on the Environmental Health & Safety Web site.
Within 24 hours of receipt of the Hazardous MSDS, the Central Storehouse will contact the originating department with further instructions. The additional instructions may include using a specific type of packaging that complies with federal and state guidelines; international restrictions regarding limitations on certain classifications of hazardous material shipments, and/or transportation restrictions imposed by the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration and the International Air Transport Association.
Upon receipt of the hazardous material shipment, the Storehouse will label the package(s) and prepare all shipping papers. Hazardous shipments cannot be sent to Central Storehouse via courier or mail service. Packages containing hazardous materials must be dropped off no later than 2:00 PM. Please advise Storehouse personnel at the service counter that the shipment is hazardous. A signed Central Storehouse/Receiving Shipping Memo (UCD Buy catalog #71461-143) must accompany the package.
Due to strict federal and state regulations, hazardous material shipments may take up to two (2) working days to achieve compliance. This time frame allows Storehouse personnel time to correctly identify and classify hazardous chemicals, and to confirm packaging and transportation restrictions.
